Don’t forget it is still Latinx and/or Hispanic Heritage Month. This heritage month began on September 15 and runs until October 15th. During this month, we celebrate the cultures and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities. First recognized in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua. During this period, Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence!
There’s still time to lean into culturally responsive teaching by engaging students with lessons that center Latinx and/or Hispanic culture and traditions. This is a learning opportunity for those who do not share this ancestry. Be brave. Lean in. “Replace judgement with curiosity” and dare to go where you may not have gone before in your practice!
Here are curriculum resources for your planning.
Have fun and let us know how it goes!!
Please join us for a Rep Training Workshop, "Better Understand your Contract," on Monday, October 7 or Wednesday, Oct 9, 4:30-6:30 at PAT. We will provide dinner. Both sessions will offer the same content, so choose the one that works best for you.
The PAT contract has undergone many changes over the last few years. We have included key provisions of the length of the workday, work year, work load, compensation, professional development, and safety, and renumbered the articles. As building reps it is essential that you are familiar with these changes.
Come join your fellow Building Rep in discussion to build a deeper understanding of our contract!

- Use the new NEA Student Loan Forgiveness Navigator Tool (SAVI) to determine if you are eligible for a federal forgiveness program and how much you could potential reduce your loan debt.
- Focus on some basic financial essentials and basic financial planning
This event is free to all PAT members. A light dinner will be served.
We're gearing up for the May 8th Day of Action with a social media campaign, but we can't do it without you! We want to hear and amplify the voices of our frontline educators, dedicated parents, and deserving students on why you are fighting for more school funding.
We encourage you to sign-up to participate in our video and headshot campaign taking place on Monday, April 22, 2018, from 3 - 8 pm at the Portland Association of Teachers building (345 NE 8th, Portland, Oregon 97232). Please wear red, bring your signs and be ready to share your story and let your voice be heard.
Help us show Oregon that educators are demanding fully funded schools, and we will not give up until we get the school funding our students need and deserve.
Wednesday, March 13th, 4-6 pm, at highway overpasses across Portland.

The March for our Students in Salem on February 18th was a wild success, we had about 5,000 people turn out to raise our voices in Salem. We got a lot of attention but we are still turning up the pressure. The public needs to know that we are seeing unprecedented challenges in our schools and we are doing unprecedented things to put pressure on our elected leaders and decision makers to fund our future and fund our schools.
Here is what's next-- we have organized a banner drop as a coordinated action across all of Oregon on Wednesday, March 13th after school. We will be displaying messages on major overpasses above rush-hour traffic across the state of Oregon. The overpasses we have selected in Portland have lots of commuter traffic to see our messages, and sidewalks to help keep folks safe.
We need your help, we need your voice, we need your engagement. There will be a captain there when you arrive to help. Please share with colleagues and friends and have them sign up to join you as well! Bring your sign from the march, bring noisemakers, and be sure to WEAR RED for ED.Continue reading
